We recently attended the news:rewired conference organised by Journalism.co.uk and held at City University in London. Above is a short interactive with an analysis of the key speakers from the event and some of their behaviour on Twitter.

NewsRewired – the event for those interested in making the news – had some breaking stuff all of its own last week.

During his panel session in front of more than 100 delegates, Greg Hadfield, one of the UK’s more conspicuously successful journalists and business people announced a change of job.

He explained his move from the Daily Telegraph to digital firm Cogapp as the result of a refusal to wait any longer for institutional journalism to catch up with the opportunities of digital.

Yesterday, Alex Hughes and Matt Buck of Drawnalism attended Amplified 09’s £1.40 ‘curated unconference’, hosted by Reuters at their London base in Canary Wharf. The event was a mixture of talks and panels loosely set around the themes of the future of news and politics, and the impact which social media services like Twitter are having upon it.

Although we were there chiefly to participate and listen, we also took the opportunity to draw sketches of the proceedings and try and convey a little of the feel of the event. You can see our sketches as they appeared on the day here.

The £1.40 of the title refers not only to the 140 character limit in a typical Twitter tweet, but also to the £1.40 suggested minimum donation and entry fee, with all proceeds going to the DEC Disasters Appeal for Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam.

It was a good event with some interesting thinkers and doers taking part, so our thanks to the organisers and hosts for getting us there.

Drawnalism.com reported Birmingham’s Hello Digital event on October 21st. During a packed day of feature and fringe events at Millennium Point in the centre of the city we produced more than 50 instant digital drawings of the day’s exhibitors, formal speakers and active participants.

You can see all of the results at our instant galleries - or watch one of the short slideshows. Alongside our visual reportage, Rhubarb Radio covered the whole event with great audio – and photographer Karen Strunks took care of the day’s photographic needs.

We’d recommend all of the sessions but if you are short of time, don’t miss Wired magazine Editor, David Rowan in his end-of-day keynote address.

Altogether, it was hard work but also made for a interesting event with plenty of food for thought in between all the digital pencilling. Drawnalism worked at Fazeley Digital in Birmingham in early June this year. We were asked to facilitate a discussion on the use of micro-blogging service, Twitter, by making a mind map or, brainstorm drawing on a very large wall. (You can watch up preparing for this interesting commisson here courtesy of Bambuser and Birmingham based Crushhouse media).

The idea was for Alex and I to start a wall-based visual conversation about the ideas and possible uses of the communication technology – and which would encourage people attending the talks to step up and add their own experiences to our visual interpretations of the conversation going on in the room.

Given the nature of associative linking in art and communication it made for a powerful, engaged and truly interactive couple of hours. (Blogger 24 Random Thoughts has a few pictures here which give you an idea of the size of the wall we were working on!)
