<p>Yesterday, <a href="mailto:alex@drawnalism.com">Alex Hughes</a> and <a href="mailto:matt@drawnalism.com">Matt Buck</a> of <strong><a href="http://drawnalism.com">Drawnalism</a></strong> attended <a href="http://www.amplified09.com/" target="_blank">Amplified 09</a>&#8217;s <a href="http://live.reuters.com/Event/1pound40_conference2" target="_blank">£1.40 &#8216;curated unconference’</a>, hosted by <a href="http://www.reuters.com/" target="_blank">Reuters</a> at their London base in Canary Wharf. The event was a mixture of talks and panels loosely set around the themes of the future of news and politics, and the impact which social media services like <a href="http://www.twitter.com/" target="_blank">Twitter</a> are having upon it.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-87" title="Sketch10" src="http://www.drawnalism.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Sketch10-300x204.jpg" alt="Sketch10" width="300" height="204" /></p>
<p>Although we were there chiefly to participate and listen, we also took the opportunity to draw sketches of the proceedings and try and convey a little of the feel of the event. You can see our sketches as they appeared on the day <a href="http://tr.im/1pound40" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-72" title="#1pound40_Abbott" src="http://www.drawnalism.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/1pound40_Abbott-300x204.jpg" alt="#1pound40_Abbott" width="300" height="204" />The £1.40 of the title refers not only to the 140 character limit in a typical Twitter tweet, but also to the £1.40 suggested minimum donation and entry fee, with all proceeds going to the <a href="http://www.dec.org.uk/" target="_blank">DEC Disasters Appeal for Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam</a>.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-86" title="Sketch9" src="http://www.drawnalism.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Sketch9-300x204.jpg" alt="Sketch9" width="300" height="204" />There was a <a href="http://www.amplified09.com/2009/11/1pound40-conference/" target="_blank">liveblog</a> of the event from Amplified and <a title="Reuters tweet stream of #1pound40" href="http://live.reuters.com/Event/1pound40_conference2?Page=56" target="_blank">Reuters</a>, and further coverage on the Guardian&#8217;s <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/pda/2009/nov/11/digital-media-1pound40-twitter-journalism-richard-sambrook" target="_blank">Digital Content blog</a>. You can also follow the continuing discussion on Twitter under the <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%231pound40" target="_blank">#1pound40</a> hashtag.</p>
<p>It was a good event with some interesting thinkers and doers taking part, so our thanks to the organisers and hosts for getting us there.</p>
<p><strong>Updated: </strong>9am on November 20th. Mark Jones of Reuters has some interesting reflections on running a social media unconference to read <a title="Reuters reflections on a conference" href="http://blogs.reuters.com/mark-jones/2009/11/19/10-lessons-from-an-unconference/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

You can see all of the results at our <a title="Drawnalism.com galleries from Hello Digital 2009" href="http://www.getdropbox.com/gallery/564489/1/Hello%20Digital?h=35d004" target="_blank">instant galleries</a><strong> </strong>- or watch one of the short <a title="Digital Breakfast at Hello Digital 2009" href="http://www.getdropbox.com/gallery/564489/1/Hello%20Digital/Breakfast/?h=35d004#" target="_blank">slideshows</a>. Alongside our visual reportage, <a title="Rhubarb Radio" href="http://www.rhubarbradio.com/live/events/hello-world.aspx" target="_blank">Rhubarb Radio</a> covered the whole event with great <a title="Rhubarb Radio at Helllo Digital 2009" href="http://helloworld.rhubarbradio.com/" target="_blank">audio</a> &#8211; and photographer <a title="Karen Strunks - photographer at Hello Digital 2009" href="http://www.karenstrunks.com/blog/hello-digital-2009/" target="_blank">Karen Strunks</a> took care of the day’s photographic needs.</p>

<p>You can catch up on the event&#8217;s key speakers and panel members at the <a title="Hello digital Blog" href="http://blog.hellodigital.net/" target="_blank">Hello Digital blog</a> including <a title="Lucy Hooberman - University of Warwick Centre for Digital Innovation" href="http://lucyhooberman.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Lucy Hooberman</a> (above) of the University of Warwick’s Centre for Digital Innovation. We&#8217;d recommend all of the sessions but if you are short of time, don&#8217;t miss <a title="Wired Magazine UK" href="http://www.wired.co.uk/" target="_blank">Wired</a><strong> </strong>magazine Editor, David Rowan in his end-of-day <a title="Wired Editor David Rowan keynote at Hello Digital" href="http://blog.hellodigital.net/2009/10/live-blog-%e2%80%94-keynote-2-david-rowan-editor-wired-uk-future-gazing/" target="_blank">keynote address</a>.</p>

Alternatively, you can follow the archived Twitter stream with the thoughts of the day&#8217;s (very active) participants. Brum blogger <a title="Jon Bounds Birmingham Social Media reporter" href="http://www.jonbounds.co.uk/" target="_blank">Jon Bounds</a> did wonders to gather them <a title="Hello Digital 2009 Tweet stream" href="http://jonbounds.co.uk/HelloTweets/" target="_blank">all together for you here</a>.</p>
<p>Altogether, it was hard work but also made for a interesting event with plenty of food for thought in between all the digital pencilling. Officially, we took part in <strong>Hello Digital&#8217;s Fringe Events</strong>, our thanks go to the organisers who asked us to cover the day for them. They are, in no particular order; <a title="Birmingham City Council" href="http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/" target="_blank">Birmingham City Council</a>, <a title="Advantage West Midlands" href="http://www.advantagewm.co.uk/" target="_blank">Advantage West Midlands</a>, <a title="The Arts Council" href="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/" target="_blank">The Arts Council</a>, <a title="Business Link" href="http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/home?domain=www.businesslink.gov.uk&amp;target=http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/" target="_blank">Business Link</a>, <a title="Birmingham Post" href="http://www.birminghampost.net/" target="_blank">Birmingham Post</a>, <a title="Digital Birmingham" href="http://www.digitalbirmingham.co.uk/" target="_blank">Digital Birmingham</a>, <a title="Screen West Midlands" href="http://www.screenwm.co.uk/" target="_blank">Screen West Midlands</a> and <a title="Visit Birmingham.com" href="http://www.visitbirmingham.com/country_selector/" target="_blank">Visit Birmingham.com.</a></p>

<p><strong>Drawnalism </strong>worked at Fazeley Digital in Birmingham in early June this year. We were asked to facilitate a discussion on the use of micro-blogging service, Twitter, by making a mind map or, brainstorm drawing on a very large wall. (You can watch up preparing for this interesting commisson <a title="Bambuser coverage of prep for #mdot" href="http://bambuser.com/channel/crushhouse/broadcast/189312" target="_blank">here</a> courtesy of Bambuser and Birmingham based Crushhouse media).</p>
<p>The idea was for Alex and I to start a wall-based visual conversation about the ideas and possible uses of the communication technology &#8211; and which would encourage people attending the talks to step up and add their own experiences to our visual interpretations of the conversation going on in the room.</p>
<p>Given the nature of associative linking in art and communication it made for a powerful, engaged and truly interactive couple of hours. (Blogger 24 Random Thoughts has a few pictures <a title="24 Random thoughts on mdot" href="http://www.24randomthoughts.com/2009/06/17/mind-map-of-mdot/" target="_blank">here</a> which give you an idea of the size of the wall we were working on!)</p>
<p>Digital thinker and academic Jon Hickman has a nice round up of the event <a title="Jon Hickman on #mdot" href="http://masocialmedia.com/?p=18#comments" target="_blank">here</a> and <a title="mdo report at Interactive Cultures" href="http://interactivecultures.org/uncategorized/my-dad%e2%80%99s-on-twitter-mdot/comment-page-1#comment-327" target="_blank">here</a> as do event organisers, <a title="Fazeley studios write up of #mdot" href="http://fazeleystudios.wordpress.com/2009/06/12/reflections-on-my-dad%e2%80%99s-on-twitter-but-he-doesn%e2%80%99t-know-why-mdot/" target="_blank">Fazeley</a> <a title="Fazeley Studios on #mdot" href="http://fazeleystudios.wordpress.com/2009/06/18/reflection-on-mdot-part-2-process-and-content/" target="_blank">Studios</a>. Event participant Jackie Booth had a few post-event reflections and we learned something from <a title="Jaki Booth on mdot" href="http://parboo.wordpress.com/2009/06/12/746/" target="_blank">them</a> too <img src='http://www.drawnalism.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
